Taskuinhado Pirata

The sea is twenty steps away.

A petiscos tavern in Vila Chã. Fresh seafood, a quiet terrace, and your drink can go with you down to the sand.

The house

They call him the Pirate. The name stuck and stayed, the way everything sticks in a small place.

A Taskuinha is a fishermen's tavern on Avenida dos Banhos, with the sea on the other side of the road. It serves petiscos, not showpiece dishes: clams, squid, salt cod fritters, and goose barnacles when the sea lets them be picked.

There is a terrace out the back for anyone who wants quiet, and the counter for anyone who doesn't. Your drink can go out the door and watch the sunset with you.

Two old muskets crossed with oars above the counter, among fishing nets, white lanterns, scallop shells and a row of wooden boats.

What comes out of the kitchen most

These are the dishes that come up most often in reviews from people who have eaten here.

A dish of clams opened in olive oil and oregano, with half a lemon in the middle and a plate of bread beside it.

Amêijoa à pirata

16,90 €

The dish that comes up most in the reviews. It arrives with bread, and the bread is there for the sauce.

Limpets grilled with garlic and coriander, each one in its shell, served on slices of toasted bread in an iron pan.

Torrada de lapas

11,90 €

Grilled with garlic and coriander, on toasted bread.

Squid grilled with garlic and pepper on a serving dish, with chips at the side.

Lulas ao alho

12,40 €

Grilled to order, with garlic and chips. They taste better on the terrace, with a small draught beer.

A plate of boiled goose barnacles and a velvet crab, on a table on the terrace, with a mug of beer and the house menu beside it.

Percebes

10,50 €

Only there when the sea lets them be picked. When there are some, they go early.

A velvet crab boiled whole, red-shelled with its claws open, on a china plate on the wooden table, with a metal cracker set down behind it.

Navalheira

4,90 €

Boiled and served whole, with the cracker beside it.

Bacalhau à Brás in a white dish: straw potatoes, flakes of salt cod, onion, chopped parsley, strips of red pepper and black olives on top.

Bacalhau à Brás

12,20 €

Shredded salt cod, straw potatoes and black olives.

The place

Vila Chã is a fishing village. The wooden boardwalks follow the coast in both directions and the Camino de Santiago passes the door, every day, under somebody's feet.

The room full on a dinner night, with football club scarves hanging from the wooden ceiling, paper lanterns, lifebuoys and tables of green, yellow and orange chairs.
The ship mural on the ceiling with a hairy spider hanging halfway down, above the counter loaded with hats, diving masks and wooden boats.
The corner of life-size pirates, with a chest overflowing with necklaces and coins, cannonballs stacked up and the Captain Morgan sign on the wooden wall.
The terrace, with its fence of planks painted every colour, a rescue board from the I.S.N. hanging up, lifebuoys, oars and a rusted bicycle leaning at the far end.

What people say

Reviews arrive in several languages, which makes sense in a house where somebody is always on their way to Santiago.

I go loads of times a year! I recommend it! It is an experience you can't miss! Food cooked really well, super attentive people, and the house itself — the decoration is spectacular!

Relaxed atmosphere, good music, decent bottled wine, right by the beach, sunset — all of it added up, it is ideal for being with friends.
